Are the Gospels really good news?

The message the Gospels convey to humanity is the very best news possible: this life with its challenges, disappointments and heartbreaks is not all there is. We have a Father in heaven who loves us and who is preparing a place in heaven for us if we will love him, and follow his commandments while here on Earth.

He doesn't promise us an easy journey to our heavenly home. As any loving parent must, he disciplines his children in order to bring them closer to that state of perfection necessary for everlasting existence among the angels and saints.

He knows that, as humans, we tend to neglect our spiritual natures when things are going smoothly. It is when there is danger or trouble for ourselves or loved ones that we turn to him in prayer. Then, we also have to consider whether we are living in a way that is pleasing to him. If not, it will probably be at these times that we will repent and change our priorities.

God also knows that, as humans, we will sin. The Bible tells us that he has made provision for the times we fall from grace. He sent his son Jesus into a time and place in earthly history. Jesus suffered and died an extremely cruel death on a cross near Jerusalem in Israel, around the year 33 A.D.

By doing so, Jesus atoned for every sin that had or would ever be committed, from the beginning of time until the end of the world. Because Jesus is God, his voluntary sacrifice had infinite value, and all humanity can benefit from his sacrifice, All the sinner needs to do is express sincere sorrow for their sins, and make a firm purpose of amendment.

People of faith agree the Gospels are the best news possible. If you are not yet one of these fortunate ones, read the Gospels anyway, and pray for the gift of faith. As your faith grows, your reward will be great - a life of peace, joy and purpose. External circumstances will lose their power to stress or depress you and worry and fear of death will no longer be camping on the doorstep of your mind.
